At what age can a child of divorced parents choose his/her custodial parent?

I am a resident of PA and have heard (from an unreliable source) the age is 12. Thanks in advance. At what age can a child of divorced parents choose his/her custodial parent?
In most states it is a maturity level not a age number.

However the average is between 12 - 14

Your child needs to get a child avocate. This a state appointed FREE (always a good word) attorney that only is allowed to listen to your child's complaints. Which means you can not call her and tell her your child hates her father, however the child can say it and she will listen to her.

My daughter has a Child Avocate. Right now she is 7 and is trying to convince that she doesn't want to see her sperm donor, i mean father, durning the week on school days. So far its working. However they will do what they feel is in the best interest of the child. At what age can a child of divorced parents choose his/her custodial parent?
Actually it depends. The voice of the child is taken into consideration as soon as they are able to express it. However although it is a consideration, other sources will usually make the final decision. For example: If one parent was considered unfit then it wouldn't matter how much the child wanted to be with that parent there is no way courts will allow it. On the other hand if both want custody and both are considered fit, then although courts would usually favour the mother if the child wanted to go with it's father then that would usually swing it.

As a child gets older the court will take their opinion into consideration more and more. However ultimately again if there is a legitimate reason as to why the child should not go then courts will rule against it as long as they are a child.

Hope you found this of value.
